What I Needed (And Why It Took So Long to Find)
I shoot with two cameras – one on, one off. I like to move, adapt, stay in the moment. But most bags either bury your kit or leave it exposed. I needed dual side access, comfortable padding that doesn’t bounce, and room for a drone, tripod, batteries, SD cards, filters, and a bit of breathing space.
Why the Tarion HX-L Stands Out
This is the first backpack I’ve found with side access that works intuitively – camera in on the left, filters on the right, and quick-grab access without the entire bag collapsing. The tuckable zips are a neat touch too, offering some peace of mind when I’m out in public or shooting events.
There’s structure without bulk. The top compartment fits my drone and controller, and the main compartment opens fully – a godsend for repacking fast or finding that one thing that always hides. There are even tripod straps that do the job – no flapping, no fiddling.
My Workflow, Rebuilt
The HX-L lets me go back to a setup I’ve missed: camera in, camera out, switch and shoot. It’s the kind of layout that makes sense if you’re used to wedding work, action shoots, or anything where changing lenses on the fly just isn’t practical. I’m not saying it’ll work for everyone – but if you’re like me, and you’ve been juggling gear in and out of half-zipped bags for years, this one might just be worth a look.
Still Early Days
I haven’t put it through every condition yet – no heavy hikes or downpours – but after a lot of frustration, this is the first bag I’ve genuinely been excited about. That says something.
